As your children’s teeth come in and their mouths grow and develop, regular dental checkups and cleanings are just as important as their yearly appointments with their pediatricians. It’s important to find a dentist with experience and expertise treating the unique dental issues that children present. In Encino, that dentist is Dr. Ed Reifman.
Getting Your Kids Off to a Great Start
Starting your kids on the road to dental care early is truly one of the best gifts you can give them. As your kids learn and practice self-care habits, these habits will carry over into other aspects of their lives, setting the stage for self-care that lasts a lifetime.
Our goal at Encino Dental Care is to show your kids that dentistry is not scary and is an important part of staying healthy. Regular checkups allow us to catch any developing problems early when simple conservative treatments are effective. Cleanings give us an opportunity to not only remove plaque and tartar from your kids’ teeth, but also chat with you about ways to help your kids’ teeth stay strong and healthy.
Caring for Children’s Teeth
Caring for your kids’ teeth doesn’t have to be complicated. When the baby teeth start coming in, it’s time to start brushing. Flossing won’t be necessary at this developmental stage since the baby teeth naturally have a lot of space between them.
Children also need little to no toothpaste. Toothpaste tastes good, and kids naturally want to swallow it. Don’t worry about the fluoride aspect of the toothpaste; the water in the San Fernando Valley area is fluoridated, and the amount of fluoride in the water is adequate for helping your kids’ teeth stay cavity-free (and no – fluoride in the water is not a conspiracy. If you have any concerns about this, please talk to us.). If your family drinks bottled or filtered water, your child may not be getting enough of this valuable mineral, and we can talk about other fluoride options.
When you put your child to bed at night, don’t allow bottles filled with juice or milk. Overnight, these sugary liquids (yes, milk has sugar) will pool in the mouth and cause cavities and decay to develop. On the other hand, nursing your child to sleep is perfectly safe and natural and will not cause cavities.
As Your Child Grows
We love to see kids who have been coming to our office since they were barely walking grow, thrive, and develop beautiful and healthy smiles. We’ll be there when your child loses their baby teeth, when their permanent teeth come in, and, if necessary, throughout the braces years. If your child catches the inevitable fly ball with his or her mouth or wakes up with pain in the gums, don’t hesitate to
give us a call for a same-day emergency dental appointment.
Our team is made up of friendly and fun people, and kids love coming to our office. Dr. Reifman is gentle and cares deeply about his patients’ dental health.
